1. Pick your license

Start with Technician. You can take the next exam at the same session if you pass.
2. Study
- HamStudy.org: free flashcards and practice exams from the real question pool.
- ARRL license manuals: the classic printed guides.
- Club classes. The club teaches license classes. Email board@aksarbenarc.org to hear about the next one.
3. Take the exam
Exams are given by Volunteer Examiners. The club sponsors ARRL VEC sessions, and other area clubs hold them regularly. Upcoming sessions are on our events page, or search the ARRL exam session finder.
Before the exam, get an FCC Registration Number (FRN) from the FCC CORES system and bring a photo ID.
4. Get on the air and join us
Your call sign usually appears in the FCC database within a couple of weeks.
First year free: if you were licensed in the last 12 months, the club waives your first year's dues. Bring your CSCE or a copy of your new license to a meeting. How to join →
